Statement of Motivation for a DBA

The meaning of life is a topic that has been discussed by the ancient Greeks, as well as by psychologists and psychiatrists.

The topic is still very relevant today, much more in the workplace because people are steered towards conventional professions without taking the time to analyze whether these professions are right for them. As a result, our society is made up of individuals who lead their lives in an automated fashion, focused on satisfying their basic needs and neglecting the possibility of giving deeper meaning to their lives.

How, then, can society or businesses prosper if their core element – people – are not happy?

It is thus imperative to foster employee’s self-realization by introducing the concept of Ikigai into our companies.

Derived from iki – meaning “alive” or “life” – and gai – meaning “benefit” or “worth”, Ikigai is a three-thousand-year-old Japanese philosophy, which translates as “reason for being”. It helps people to clearly define their purpose in life, leading to well-being and satisfaction. Thus, my intention, via this DBA, is to find a way of reconciling the well-being of people, and the growth of companies through the concept of Ikigai.
