The Aspen Institute’s Business & Society International MBA Case Competition represents a real-life business challenge at the intersection of corporate profitability and positive environmental, social and ethical impacts. Now in its fourth year, the competition encourages the next generation of business leaders to think innovatively about the role of business in solving the world’s most pressing issues.

This year, more than 800 students of 25 MBA programs worldwide tackled a new case study, co-authored by the Yale School of Management and the National University of Singapore Business School, focused on questions of regional economic development and environmental sustainability that Golden Agri-Resources – the world’s second largest palm oil plantation company – are currently facing. Students had three days to analyze and respond to the new business and society-focused case study. A total of 11 BSL MBA students competed in 3 teams and their work was reviewed by a BSL panel of academic judges which determined the first place campus team.

“I am proud of our MBA participants’ contribution, in such a prestigious competition. Their strategic approaches not only made business sense but demonstrated a solid understanding of how to engage with stakeholders to address a highly controversial business dilemma with significant impact on both the environment and society,” said Dr. Katrin Muff, Dean of BSL. “Our teams have proven an agility to look beyond business for inter-disciplinary solutions for the common good – truly impressive in the analysis and recommendations. It gives me hope that we are on the right path to educate future leaders capable of addressing the complex environmental, economic and societal challenges we are and will be facing.”

The BSL campus winner was selected from hundreds of student competitors in the Top 10 of 25 participating business school teams. BSL’s successful participation in the Aspen Institute case competition reflects the school’s orientation towards integrating sustainability and responsibility in management education.

PROFESSIONAL CAREER AND KEY ACHIEVEMENTS

20 years experience in the High Tech industry, managing large programs in business process transformation and IT delivery (including deriving solution requirements from business strategy, implementing process improvements for the Finance, Logistics, Manufacturing and Customer Administration functions, deploying ERP systems and implementing decision-making and balanced scorecard solutions). Worked extensively in Europe, North America and Latin America. Associate partner at PWC Consulting/IBM for nine years.

RESEARCH INTEREST

Business rationale must be the major driver of innovation and sustainability in our society, if we want to avoid a “perfect storm” of resource scarcity, climate change and pollution. Today, companies realize that they can proactively reduce costs and manage risks by minimizing waste, pollution, energy usage and avoiding harmful social impact. Companies pursuing those objectives therefore need to develop a comprehensive way for measuring performance that includes sustainability. My research will focus on:

1. Assessing existing performance management frameworks for sustainability in the High Tech industry
2. Evaluating existing performance management software platforms (e.g. SAP, Oracle, Microsoft) that support sustainability as a key theme
3. Developing a set of recommendations for improving existing performance management frameworks and software platforms for the High Tech industry.

STATEMENT OF MOTIVATION FOR A DBAB

Whilst leveraging my extensive prior experience in the High Tech industry, gaining deep insights and developing practical solutions (concepts plus software platforms) such that High Tech companies can truly embed sustainability as a key element in their overall business strategies and growth plans

Developing recommendations and designing functionality for software platform providers (e.g. SAP, Oracle, Microsoft) to strengthen their sustainability related product offering.

PROFESSIONAL CAREER AND KEY ACHIEVEMENTS

I have been working as lecturer for more than seven years now. I have taught courses of both Management and Marketing. A closed interaction with books during my teaching career has strengthened my conceptual and theoretical base. I have supervised more than 10 master level thesis. I have several research articles and books published by different international publishers. Being an elected member of Board of Governors of my university, I am serving as member of several central administrative committees of the university.

RESEARCH INTEREST

My key area of interest is to explore the methods which can be adopted by the organizations to develop a sustained ethical culture in organizations especially in developing countries. I want to study the behaviors of the employees in the organizations which are still in the process of instilling ethical practices. Only, the ethically mature employees can play a vital role in creating sustained cultures in the organizations. Adopting and implementing sustainability practices as part of the culture is dependent upon the commitment of employees which is reinforced by the management practices.

STATEMENT OF MOTIVATION FOR A DBAB

The key motivational factor for doing this DBA program is to solidify my grip on research based knowledge. I want to excel in the field of academics for which I desperately want to enhance my knowledge base. I want to link the theoretical and conceptual understandings with practical paradigms. This program will be a springboard for my career. Being a citizen of a developing country, I can be of great help to the organizations and other social entities to get awareness about sustainability practices and concerns.

PROFESSIONAL CAREER AND KEY ACHIEVEMENTS

Having my Bachelor’s in Hospitality Management from Hotelschool The Hague in the Netherlands, I have over eighteen years’ experience in the hotel industry. My work experience in Hilton International properties in Abu Dhabi and in Izmir, Turkey provided me invaluable insight and experience in management of hotel chains. Then it made sense to move on to management of small hotels where as a hotel manager, I have been able to apply my know-how at a smaller scale yet with more flexibility and a higher degree of adaptiveness. Since 2004, I am the Hotel Manager of Tempo Hotel Bucharest in Romania, which I consider my baby. Tempo Hotel Bucharest has been voted by Expedia and Tripadvisor as Distinguished Hotel of the Year both in 2010 and 2012.

RESEARCH INTEREST

The current global business context entails growing public as well as consumer awareness and demand for sustainable business practices; to not only enhance our highly-constrained and degraded planetary natural resources but also eliminate current imbalances in corporate wealth creation which accelerate poverty. This indicates the growing need for corporate localization strategies, to effectively reach the Outcome of Sustainability: Well-being. At the heart of these corporate localization strategies lies interactive/interconnected stakeholder engagements, to provide the input for innovation of corporate sustainable practices. My research interests lie in developing metrics, mechanisms and tools to integrate stakeholder engagements into performance measurement frameworks of corporations such as a Balanced Scorecard(BSC).

STATEMENT OF MOTIVATION FOR A DBAB

I think my main motive for desiring a DBA is the fact that I love to learn everything in the field of management. Having deepened my management related knowledge more in the Executive MBA program, I have an intrinsic drive and motivation to develop myself further academically as well as professionally. In this respect, I believe that through a well-earned DBA, I will also have the beautiful chance of pursuing careers not only in management but also in sustainability consulting and in the sacred profession of teaching, as midcareer options. A DBA will help me broaden my options in the current highly complex business environment.

PROFESSIONAL CAREER AND KEY ACHIEVEMENTS

I am a senior finance professional with more than 20 years of corporate finance, commercial, supply chain, and business development experience. I have held senior finance and CFO roles in banking, food & beverages, building products, and retail businesses. In my professional career I have managed large scale supply chain restructuring project, lead major acquisitions in food and beverages sector, implemented new ERP systems, implemented new processes for long-term strategic planning. I have experience in dealing with fiscal and statutory authorities, and manage the relationship with market analyst. In the past 5 years I have been running my own consulting business focusing on financial management and sustainability.

RESEARCH INTEREST

My research interest is in the domain of corporate strategy, and sustainability. My research topic is Corporate Accountability and Valuation of Externalities: connecting social progress with the value of the firm’s strategy. I am interested in alternative framework of corporate accountability for sustainable use of all resources within the context of a market economy. The main concern for me is how to create an alternative mechanism for corporate engagement in the sustainability agenda how to develop measurement systems that create a framework of corporate value creation which takes into account financial, environmental, social and human capital specific to the firm.

STATEMENT OF MOTIVATION FOR A DBAB

The motivation for my DBA is to gain knowledge and a formal understanding of the issues in promoting a more sustainable and just world. I have a deep belief that we all have an obligation and responsibility for the protection of our planet and all its ecosystems. I also have a deep concern for the large part of humanity that have poor or no access to the basic needs for wellbeing and ability to flourish as human beings. I hope to devote the rest of my life becoming a strong advocate for sustainable and just world.

PROFESSIONAL CAREER AND KEY ACHIEVEMENTS

Frédéric started his studies with a Swiss Certificate of Capacity and a Maturité Fédérale in Polymecanics. He then joined the Air Force Non Commissioned Officers School to become a chief mechanic on the fighter jets. He started his career in Kazakhstan in the real estate business. Back in Switzerland, he started a biodiesel business. Joining Alcoa, he was assigned to Russia as Project Manager and then Strategic Marketing Manager and was nominated to Alcoa’s talent acquisition program. After completing his EMBA, he returned to Switzerland and worked in the dental and orthopedic industries holding the positions of Director of operations and then COO. He now works in Geneva for a US company as Technical Sales Manager for Europe and Africa.

RESEARCH INTEREST

Having worked in various industries located in different countries, I have come to realize that despite the differences in cultures, the common underlying factor affecting the management of a company is its capital structure. Being persuaded that the “short-termism” syndrome has a negative impact on the company and its shareholders in the long-run, the environment and society, I want to research the subject to better understand the dynamics and eventually suggest an optimum capital structure model.

STATEMENT OF MOTIVATION FOR A DBAB

“Make a difference”, those are the three words I would use to describe my motivations. I am certain that today’s overall business practices are the by-product of out-of-time models. With the acceleration and globalization of business practices in today’s global environment, I feel the need to stop and reflect on what I have learned, analyze and process my findings to then use them to contribute and make a difference. When I was a child, my father always asked me whether I wanted to be a passenger or the pilot of the plane. I see the DBA as a chance to become a pilot and make a difference.
